Recently on Koh Tao the weather and diving have been awesome, so this morning we decided to take a trip out to Southwest Pinnacles for a double dive.
There were quite a few fun divers on the boat but split up between three of our divemasters and a few instructors we were all able to dive in small groups, with me were Jiri and Dennis both advanced divers.
Our first dive we dropped down to 30m and spent most of the dive on the outskirts of the dive site, with the amazing visibility (30+ meters) giving us a spectacular view of the main pinnacle from afar as well as letting us easily explore the outlaying boulders. Within minutes of the dive we came on a big school of Pickhandle Barracuda (ranging between 1 to 1.5m in length!) As well as a school of Chevron Barracuda. Throughout the dive there was a myriad of marine life all around us but some of the more impressive were the Giant Groupers (1-2 meters in length!)Some huge Queenfish and some big Mackerel and Trevallies (several different types of Trevallies ranging in size.)
Finishing the dive we headed up to the surface for some swimming and jumping off the top deck of the boat for an hour before we went back to gear up and head in for dive number two.
On the second dive the few other dive boats on the site had gone so we had the site completely to ourselves which is always a bonus, I decided to take us off the site to another pinnacle called “the secret pinnacle” After reaching this separate area off the main site we were overrun with life. Schools of Yellowtail Barracuda, Fusilier, Yellowstripe Trevally and more were everywhere! What got our attention most though was the large grouping of Cobia (5 or more) darting around the backside of the pinnacle, we went down to let them circle around us for a few minutes before deciding to head back towards the main dive site but just before we left the secret pinnacle we came on to another school of Chevron Barracuda and as we swam through to our amazement two big Blacktip Reef Sharks darted in front of us then circled around and swam off into the distance.
It was an amazing morning of Koh Tao diving for everybody and we can’t wait to head back out to Southwest Pinnacles for another morning of diving.
