Toby from Finland began taking his PADI Open Water course back at home. Completing his scuba diving theory and shallow water skills session in Scandinavia, only the four open water dives remained for him to become certified as a PADI Open Water Diver.
Rather sensibly, Toby opted to switch icy Finland for tropical Koh Tao, Thailand to complete his four open water dives. We can all understand our 29C water temperature being a lot more appealing than Finland during January!
For the first dive of the PADI Open Water referral we boarded the Simple Life dive boat to make our way to the ‘Twins’ pinnacle dive site north-west of Koh Tao. Myself and Toby enjoyed an easy first open water dive, where we encountered a variety of marine life including butterfly fishes, angel fishes and blue-spotted stingrays. For our second dive we motored across to ‘White Rock’, a few hundred meters off Sairee Beach and again enjoyed another fun dive. Toby was required to do a bit more work this time though – I supervised Toby performing a number of scuba skills at about 5M depth, building up his confidence and fine tuning his scuba diving skills. Toby was calm, confident and composed and demonstrated the mask and regulator skills with ease, after we enjoyed the rest of the dive searching round the huge coral reef and rocky granite pinnacles, searching out different species of aquatic life and corals.

The following day we made the final two dives of the PADI course, this time exploring the pinnacles and reefs right down to the PADI Open Water course maximum depth of 18 meters. We had a lot of fun and Toby has shaped up to be a very capable and confident scuba diver, and I had no reservations in certifying him as a newest PADI Open Water diver.
Congratulations Toby and maybe we’ll see you again sometime soon for the Advanced Course 😉
