As we emerge from Koh Tao‘s monsoon season, we’re congratulating four new divers passing their PADI Open Water course with Simple Life Divers.
Sophie and John from the UK were joined by Americans Ryan and Amelia, making a group of four for the PADI Diving course.
We began with an orientation to the diving course and a bit of scuba diving theory, then the gang got to get wet for the first time with a shallow water skills session. They got to practice lots of important scuba skills for the first time, including learning how to clear their mask and regulator underwater, breathing from an alternate air source in a simulated out of air situation, and even mastering hovering weightlessly in mid water.

Next followed everyone’s favorite part of the PADI Open Water course – their four open water dives where we headed out on the Simple Life boat to explore the coral reefs and rocky pinnacles surrounding Koh Tao. During our first two open water dives we dived down to a maximum depth of around 12M, then during the final two dives of the course made it right down to the PADI course maximum depth of 18M. We explored hard coral reefs of brain corals, pore corals and table corals, navigated around delicate sea whips & Gorgonian fan corals, and even swam through narrow channels cut into formed between Koh Tao’s characteristic granite boulders and submerged pinnacles. All the time we were keeping a look out for the tropical marine species of the Gulf of Thailand which surrounded us!
At the start there were a few ‘rough edges’, but the gang progressed well throughout the four open water dives, fine tuning their buoyancy control and developing better awareness and competency underwater. They’ve turned out as capable divers and I had no hesitations in signing them off as PADI Open Water Divers.
Congratulations Sophie, John, Ryan and Amelia – and enjoy your future scuba diving adventures!
