This new year i was lucky enough to have my cousins come and visit me on the beautiful Island. Eloise, Mark and their 10 year old daughter Tarka.
Having recovered from their journey and sun tans coming along nicely, Young Tarka pulled me aside and said that she would really love to learn how to dive so she could spend more time looking at all the fish. Both Eloise and Mark have dived before and were more than happy to let me take her out.
We decided on doing a PADI discover scuba dive, just to see how things went, so after breakfast i took Tarka into the class room and ran through the flip chart explaining the basics of diving and how all the equipment worked. She picked it all up so fast and was really keen to get gong.
So off on the boat we went, Eloise and mark in tow keen to see how she did. First stop was Budda Rock where we went into the shallows and practiced how to clear our masks and recover and clear our regulators. No problems what so ever only her excited face whenever a fish swam by! From the shallow beach, and firmly gripping my hand we descended down slowly bit by bit until finally reaching 6 meters. This was more than enough to ensure that she was hooked! this visibility was amazing and with so many different varieties of fish around we didn’t have to go looking.
Back on the boat i gently asked how she liked it, “JoJo it was Epic!” With that as the go ahead we took off on a second dive, this time getting a bit deeper, 10 meters, again it was beautiful and i got to see my first sea horse…. Well done Tarka, i’m looking forward to teaching her Open water when they return to Koh Tao next year!
