A couple of days ago Marc, Reziana and Alex were completing their PADI Advanced course here at Simple Life Divers, whilst Brian tagged along to do make his Deep Adventure dive. Since we were able to dive down to a maximum depth of 30M we decided to head out to one of the premier dive sites near Koh Tao – the famous Chumphon Pinnacles, about 45 minutes away.
Departing early morning aboard the recently refitted Simple Life dive boat we had no idea what was ahead of us.
En-route, word spread via the captain’s radio that a whale shark was circling the dive site. Excitement mounted as we prepared our scuba diving equipment and performed pre-dive safety checks. We waited eagerly and nervously during the final approach to the dive site…..
When we finally arrived at the mooring buoy following what felt like an eternity we made a quick entry into the water. We descended down the buoy-line to the top of the pinnacle at about 16M, then continued down the face of the giant granite monolith eventually meeting the ocean floor at 30 meters. Exploring the depths we rounded spectacular ‘Barracuda Rock’ at the western extremity of the Koh Tao dive site.
Surrounded by aquatic life, within the first 5 minutes of the dive we saw a vast shoal of chevron barracuda, many jacks and trevaly, with bat -fish peering inquisitively at us and banner-fish swimming between the corals.
But best was the approximately 5 meter whale shark! We managed to swim with the biggest species of fish (in the world) for a good couple of minutes before it headed up toward the surface and made it’s way out into the blue.
That same evening the team regrouped and we made our way to White Rock for the PADI Advanced night dive. During the dive we had a lot of fun. No whale sharks, but the experience of plunging down into the darkness and exploring the reef with a flashlight for the first time is an unforgettable and exciting experience. I’ve had a great time running this PADI Advanced course and got enjoyed my few days diving with Marc, Reziana and Alex, (and a whale shark of course)!
