I was going to high school. When I was done, I decided I had to do something amazing for my gap year.
Life on the rock was amazing. Everyone is so nice and it’s like one big family. I made friends for life, which now I can visit all over the world. It’s a great excuse to travel again. Heading down to the bar after diving every day was so much fun too.
My favourite dive site was chumphon. I loved staring out into the blue, looking out for the famous whaleshark. But also, when you turn around and look at the reef itself, it’s so full of life. I saw some of the coolest things there, like giant groupers and huge schools of barracudas. Also, a definite plus as a dmt, it’s relatively easy to navigate 😉 not even the worst among us got lost there…
But I also liked the wreck, with it’s eeriness. Even though the viz there usually isn’t too good, it’s so much fun to navigate closer to it and suddenly look into a canon that appeared out of nothing.
I love how the divemaster training was organised. Everyone had a lot of freedom choosing, when to do what part of the training. Also, because dmts are encouraged to go diving together every day, you get a lot of practice in guiding, the most important part of the job for every DM. I was a bit intimidated by the swim tests at first, but it turns out they are war easier then I thought. As long as you give your best, you’re not gonna fail them.
I can’t tell you a lot about the nightlife in Koh Tao, mainly because I don’t remember much. But usually it all starts with the famous happy hour in lotus bar, 2for1 buckets is a great deal. You can watch and even join the fire dancers there. After that, going to fish bowl or bar next too always was fun.
I could talk for hours about the great food though. At duck restaurant you, hands down can get the best duck noodle soup on the whole island. And just a bit outside chalok, there is a great place for korean barbeque. But every type of food is available on the island, and all of it is great and rather cheap. Just stick to the thai food, it’s usually the best.
I got so captured by diving, I recently did my instructors course and am studying marine biology at uni. Next summer I’m moving to australia to work there as an instructor.
There were so many funny stories, I don’t know, which one to choose… I think one of my favourite is that at one point I got really obsessed with finding a turtle. I was really unlucky about it too, so whenever I skipped just one dive or had a lie in, the others saw one. So at one point we invented the turtle call and for about 2 weeks all the dmts were looking like morons while going for a dive.
